Accessing music therapy

In this week’s Topic Tuesday on music therapy, a few people mentioned that they would love to access music therapy but weren’t sure if it was affordable or available in their location.

There are a few ways of finding opportunities to engage in music therapy without spending a lot of money:

  • Ask around at your local community or neighbourhood centres to find out if they offer music programs.
  • Identify a psychologist who is trained in music therapy so that you can access it through your mental health treatment plan. You will need to contact the clinics in your area to find out about the qualifications of individual psychologists.
  • If you are in a larger city, there are sometimes specialist not-for-profit organisations offering creative therapeutic activities such as music and art. One I’m aware of is Wild at Heart in Melbourne.

Some of these programs will be run by registered music therapists, others might be run by musicians or other mental health professionals.

And as Lisa-Marie mentioned on Tuesday, it’s also possible to enjoy lots of the benefits of music therapy when listening or playing music on our own.
